Onboard use of fuel cells, which will let notebook computers run three to 10 times longer without a recharge, has been questioned because they contain methanol, a flammable liquid.

But the DOT said that a cell designed by start-up PolyFuel can ride in airplane cabins when it emerges commercially because it contains a relatively low concentration of methanol, according to Jim Balcom, PolyFuel’s CEO.

Eventually, fuel cells will provide a charge 10 times longer than batteries, according to various sources.

Many analysts have viewed approval from transportation authorities as a necessary step to commercialization. If fuel cell powered notebooks can’t be taken on planes, few people will buy them. It also helps psychologically.

“It is not surprising that people are hesitant, (but) once it gets approved, obviously it is viable,” said Matt Sargent, notebook analyst at market research firm ARS. “There is a clear need for progress in the battery space. It has been one of the hard spots for the industry.”

Air passengers, though, won’t be stoking up alcohol-burning notebooks anytime soon. PolyFuel’s cells remain in the development stage, and notebook makers won’t likely put them in notebooks until late 2004.

“We’ve still got around a year and a half to go,” said Balcom. “We’re still in the technology development phase.”

In PolyFuel’s so-called eight molar methanol fuel cells, methanol, which ultimately provides the power, constitutes only 24 percent of the fluid. The rest is water.

The cells break down methanol molecules into protons, electrons and carbon dioxide. While the protons pass through a specialized membrane, the electrons can’t and get shuffled into a wire that powers the device containing the cell. The by-products from the chemical reaction come together as water molecules.

Rather than completely forgo batteries, notebook makers will likely come out with computers that contain both batteries and fuel cells, said Balcom. Sanyo, among other Japanese manufacturers, has committed to coming out with fuel cell notebooks two or more years from now.

But other regulations could delay fuel cell notebooks from taking off. Airlines can independently ban certain products or devices from the cabin if they feel the objects could interfere with the handling of the aircraft, said a representative for the Federal Aviation Administration. The Department of Transportation could not be reached for comment.

Menlo Park, Calif.-based PolyFuel is a spinoff of research firm SRI Research. Investors include Intel and venture capital firm Mayfield Venture. Competitors include MTI MicroFuel Cells.

You can’t. Or even if you could it wouldn’t do you any good. You would need high tech manufacturing equipment costing far more than the fuel cell to make one. Just like the blueprints for a V8 engine would not be enough for you to make your own V8 engine. You would need a complete machine shop, and maybe a foundry too, costing FAR more than an engine to make an engine.

Does anyone know how much power (electrical or other measurement) can one get from one cubic meter of Hydrogen, on a Fuel cell?

The amount of energy is approximately 305.7 kJ, but power is work divided by time. Without knowing the reaction rate for burning hydrogen, it will be difficult to determine the amount of power to be produced and it will be limited by the shape of the cubic foot of gas as well.

Don’t limit yourself to fuel cells. A fuel cell is just another type of battery (electricity storage and retrieval through chemical processes), and in fact, the hydrogen fuel cell still offers greatly inferior efficiency to the latest battery technology. In light of this, I do not believe the current focus on fuel cells for transportation will persist much longer.

People are getting more and more excited about green automobiles hp pavilion tx2500 battery, so it was kind of surprising to see such a neutral reaction to the Fuel Cell Car by Riversimple. While this project has a very interesting slant from other cars that we have seen in this niche, it was met with a very lukewarm reception and things have not really heated up on in yet. However, the Riversimple Fuel Cell Car continues on and will hopefully be available for release in the next few years.

One of the biggest knocks on the car is its general appearance. Now this is pretty shocking considering some of the designs that have come out with electric cars. Having said that, electric cars have finally made a turn for the better and some of the designs that are out and that will be coming out are pretty dramatically different from what we have seen in the past.

The Riversimple Fuel Cell Car almost looks like an AMC Pacer lenovo thinkpad x301 battery that was premature. To say that it is an attractive car would be a stretch, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What does make this car attractive is the anticipated pricing. Current estimates have it costing the owner about 2/month in USD. Compared to some of the other options, this is truly a bargain.

Another attractive aspect of the car is the range that it will have. Many of the electric cars that are out and will be coming out are stuck in the 80-100 mile range. Reportedly, the Riversimple Fuel Cell Car will be able to cover about 240 miles before it needs recharging. According to Riversimple, it has “an efficiency dell inspiron 1440 battery equivalent to 300 miles to the gallon.” That is a pretty impressive number and one that may make people look past the AMC Pacer look and deep into their wallets.

Gm Readies Fuel Cell Technology

General Motors has announced it is moving more than 500 fuel cell experts from advanced development laboratories to core engineering functions to prepare fuel cell technology for future production.

Over 400 fuel cell engineers will report to the company’s Powertrain Group to start production engineering of fuel cell systems. The automaker added that 100 workers will transfer to GM’s Global Product Development organization to begin integrating fuel cells into future product lines. Additionally, over 150 fuel cell scientists and program support will remain as part of the automaker’s Research and Development center. They will continue advanced research in hydrogen storage, fuel cells and program commercialization. The decision of the largest American automaker is aimed at expediting its efforts to produce vehicles that displace petroleum through energy diversity.

GM Vice President Research and Development and Strategic Planning Larry Burns stands with the company’s E-Flex Fuel Cell variant. “Eight years ago we said that hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle technology could make a major contribution to solving the energy and environmental challenges facing the automobile industry,” said Burns. “Today’s announcement signals another important milestone as we move fuel cell vehicles closer to future production.”

“Moving our fuel cell experts from advanced development laboratories to our core engineering organizations highlights our strong commitment to developing electrically-driven vehicles using diverse energy sources” said Tom Stephens, the GM Group Vice President of Global Powertrain.

The GM realignment is another initiative in its commitment to displace petroleum usage in the industry through a range of propulsion alternatives. The alternatives include the E85-capable biofuel vehicles, two-mode hybrid system for large city buses, a two-mode hybrid system for the Chevrolet Tahoe and the GMC Yukon, the Saturn Vue Green Line and Saturn Aura Green Line Hybrid Systems, and a two-mode hybrid Vue Green Line.

The largest American automaker shared details about its fifth-generation fuel cell system technology at the Shanghai Auto Show in April when it introduced the fuel cell-powered E-Flex version of the Chevrolet Volt. This updated system is half the size of its forerunner but delivers the same performance and power. The Volt may not be flaunting the Chevrolet Camaro heat shield but it features the most advanced technology in the auto industry. The Volt is expected to be released a few years from now.

Currently, the company’s fourth-generation system powers the Chevrolet Sequel and Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles. The Sequel is the first electrically-driven fuel cell vehicle to achieve over 300 miles on one tank of hydrogen, in and out of traffic on public roads, while generating zero emissions. The Equinox Fuel Cell will be introduced later this year as part of Project Driveway, which will place over 100 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with consumers in New York, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.

Leading the fuel cell engineering team is Dr. J. Byron McCormick, the current executive director of GM Fuel Cell Activities. McCormick will report simultaneously to Dan Hancock, the GM Powertrain Vice President for Global Engineering, and John Buttermore, the GM Powertrain Vice President for Global Manufacturing.

McCormick has been working on electric and fuel cell propulsion system research and development for more than three decades. He was part of the development of the EV-1 electric vehicle. In the past decade, he has led the GM fuel cell activities team to becoming the leader in fuel cell technology worldwide.

GM offers more vehicles that achieve 30 mpg on the highway than any other automaker in the U.S. market. Additionally, the company is also the first automotive member to join the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), a group of global companies and non-governmental organizations formed to back an campaigns aimed at limiting carbon emissions.
