A fuel cell works by catalysis, separating the component electrons and protons of the reactant fuel, and forcing the electrons to travel though a circuit, hence converting them to electrical power.

As Yogi Berra said, it is deja vu all over again. Prices for crude oil are skyrocketing through the roof. Experts worry about peak oil which is predicted to cause worldwide competition over limited supplies. Going back to the gas crisis of 1973, America has seen this coming. However, it hasn’t taken any concrete steps to move away from the addiction to dirty oil. Even when the solution exists with hydrogen fuel cell cars.

The negatives attached to our dependence on fossil fuels are well known. Emitting volumes of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere is contributing to the warming of the planet. Although there is debate within the expert community as to the extent and causation of this warming, it is universally recognized that it exists and can’t lead to anything good.

Some say our fate was sealed over half a century ago when President Eisenhower embarked upon a massive program of interstate highway construction. This resulted in today’s suburbia and its correlating requirements of personal vehicle use. If America had evolved differently into a more urban nature, then public transportation would be a viable alternative. This is obviously not the case for much of the country.

Depending upon our cars to get us to work and all other life’s activities, we have no choice but to guzzle billions of gallons of gas. Whereas technology in all other facets has evolved rapidly, we drive around in cars burning the same basic fuels they did generations ago. However, there are those seeking alternatives. Many claim they do exist.

One such alternative relates to a simple element. That element is hydrogen. It is a word often associated with power ranging from the sun to the hydrogen bomb. There is however, a far more tame and beneficial use for hydrogen power. When used efficiently via fuel cells, hydrogen can be the cure to our oil addiction.

There are several obstacles to the substitution of hydrogen for fossil fuels. The first has mostly been overcome. Production of a hydrogen powered car has been achieved in the development labs. Highly expensive, as most new technologies are, the price will come down over time with more efficient production techniques and volume sales. Remember how much you paid for that first beta max compared to today’s dvd player prices?

Widespread adoption would require places along the road to recharge the cells. We obviously are built out currently to support filling up our tanks with gas. How would we produce hydrogen and power the requisite process? There is much debate about this. Some point to the sun using solar panels to power the production of hydrogen at these new fill up stations. Others point to building out the nuclear power infrastructure to support this huge additional demand that would be presented by myriad hydrogen production stations.

There are many questions and several technological breakthroughs needed before we are all driving hydrogen fuel cell cars. However, the rising prices of gas may very well prove to be the impetus speeding up the adoption of fuel cells. Clean and potentially based on fully renewable sources like the sun, these cars could be the answers to all our prayers.

With global warming, general pollution and rising fuel prices, our future energy needs are a hot topic. Fuel cells may represent a solution, one coming sooner than later.

Future Energy Concepts – The Fuel Cell

A fuel cell is a fairly vague phrase thrown around by those in the know and those that know relatively little. Regardless of the particular design, a fuel cell is essentially a cell similar to a battery in which a chemical process occurs to produce electricity. In this case, however, the fuel is hydrogen. The basic idea is to combine hydrogen with oxygen in a process that produces electricity. This electricity is then used as we would normally use it in our lives.

If you read the paper or watch the news, one would think the concept of hydrogen fuels in a new one. In fact, it is not. The first one was created in 1839. The problem, of course, was it was inefficient and there wasn’t much interest since fossil fuels were plentiful and our energy needs were tiny compared to today. It wasn’t until the 1960s that much interest was shown in the energy platform. As with many advances, NASA decided to use fuel cells to power the Gemini and Apollo spacecrafts. Unfortunately, the trick has been translating this limited use to wide spread applications in daily life.

A common misconception is a fuel cell represents renewable energy. Very clearly, it does not. It is a device, not an energy platform. It is like saying a hydroelectric dam is a renewable energy. The dam is a machine to harness a renewable energy resource, but not an energy source in and of itself. The fuel cell works much the same way. It is a methodology for harnessing energy from hydrogen. The particular method can be clean or dirty, to wit, one can use water or coal for the base material. Obviously, coal is not much help.

Fuel cells can be run, in theory, on any material containing hydrogen. This means renewable energy sources such as hydrogen, biogas, and so on. The primary goal is to focus on water and other renewable sources because of their inherent clean advantages. When hydrogen is used, for instance, it produces no tangible pollution or greenhouse gases. The byproduct, instead, is simply water.

There are a few hurdles that must be overcome before hydrogen fuel cells really become a viable energy platform. First, the technology is such that the fuel cells are far too large and heavy to be used for practical purposes. The infamous hydrogen car is not currently viable because of this, although test cars from primarily German manufacturers are being evaluated. The second problem is efficiency, which is to say fuel cells are not. Currently, fuel cells produce energy at a cost of about 10 times that of fossil fuels, and that is a positive estimate. Again, not a viable option.

While these may seem like significant hurdles, they actually point to the viability of hydrogen fuel cells as a power source. These problems are focused on technical aspects of delivery, not on whether the process works. If there is anything we are good at as a species, it is making technological breakthroughs. If we can build a hydrogen nuclear weapon, surely we can build a hydrogen fuel cell.

If you are like me, you might be a little concerned about high gas prices and big companies trying to rip you off. I’m really thinking to convert my car to run on water using HHO fuel (aka brown’s gas) to save money on gas. Many people have made testimonials that claim 50-70% improvement on gas millage once they have converted their car using this technology. This in itself is a major reason why I want to build a hydrogen fuel cell and fit it under the hood of my car.

Using a HHO fuel cell to power my car would have a second effect adding to using less gas. HHO fuel have the ability to clean up the engine itself during the first few hundred miles and keep it clean. Therefore it increases engine power and gas millage, reducing fuel consumption a little bit more.

A car that uses less gasoline in a clean engine means what? Cleaner exhaust emissions. The fact is that burning hydrogen result in only one by-product: water. No pollution at all. Reducing the gasoline consumption results in less exhaust fumes, cleaner engine result in cleaner exhaust fumes. Running my car with water using HHO fuel cell technology would have a great impact on my environment.

We are all searching new and effective solutions to create a better place to live by reducing pollution at the source. I think that doing what I can do over the things I control (my stuff: car, home, garden…) is the best way to move into the future.

I just need to learn a little bit more about the different plans, diagrams and kits that are available to build a homemade fuel cell for my car. I really want to convert my car to run on water. There are dozens of products available. Some of them work, others need fine tuning. I have narrowed down my researches to the best three products.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars, sometimes called water powered cars are nothing new, the technology to run cars on water as a supplement to your ordinary gasoline has been around for years. And now the internet is flooded with guides and plans showing you how to build a hydrogen fuel cell, or (how to make a hydrogen generator for your car as it comes down to the same thing.)

I think that hydrogen fuel cell cars are going to catch on in a really big way. Not only are they very easy to make, but also cheap enough for anyone to build one. You can convert your cars into water power cars for as little as 0, and all the parts you will need can be bought from local hardware stores or at auto stores.

So how does hydrogen for cars work?
The basis behind hydrogen fuel cell cars is a simple process called electrolysis this is the act of breaking water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen to create a gas called HHO gas or Brown’s gas. This gas is then mixed with gasoline in your cars engine and burned in the usual way. But as this mixture burns a lot more efficiently you get a smoother running engine and more mpg.

Basically what you will need to build a DIY hydrogen fuel cell are just a few simple parts. These include a small container to hold water, one that will fit under your cars hood in the engine compartment.
