Gerukamukh (Assam), Mar 1 Union Power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today reviewed progress of the controversial Lower Subansiri hydroelectric power project here in Assam’s Dhemaji district.
Shinde accompanied by Union Power secretary P Umar Shanker visited the construction site of the 2000 MW dam and the power house before reviewed its progress with the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) officials responsible for the project, official sources said.
the minister was informed that 25 per cent work of the main dam’s foundation in the Subansiri river was completed with its underwater foundation constructed fully, they said.
the ongoing movement against the dam’s construction by various environmentalist groups, students organisations, opposition political parties and NGOs demanding immediate halt of project work as they apprehended negative downstream impact was also discussed, the sources said.
