How do I convert my gas car to electric?
Any websites to help or conversion kits out there? she is a 97 Honda civic, is good on gas but I just want to know if it is even an option to convert or if anyone else has done it.
admin answers:
Of course you can convert it. I recently finished converting a Geo Tracker to electric. See my Web site at http://www.electronautomotive.com, click on the link and write me. I can help you.
EVParts.com sells a lot of the components, but there are less expensive sources for many parts. I learned a lot of valuable lessons doing my conversion, so I can help.

Chris asks…
What is the best ultra-capacitor/battery conversion kits available?
I am interested in converting my 1993 Honda Accord into an electric car. I’ve been searching online for a kit and don’t know which one is best. I want it to use ultra-capacitor/battery technology. I am seriously wanting to end our countries dependence of oil.
admin answers:
Most kits use the cheapest methods and parts to keep costs down. I’m not saying that they have low quality, but of the alternatives they will tend to the least expensive one.
You are looking to do a higher end conversion and I don’t know of anybody is supplying full kits. The Honda this guy http://www.metricmind.com/ac_honda/main.htm did is a high end demonstration. The controller he used is no longer available. He had to engineer the entire thing along the way. The only thing that was prepackaged was the controller and the motor because they have to be precisely matched to get the full specified power output.

Paul asks…
Why did the government kill the electric car, water engine, and other fuel alternatives?
I know it’s all about oil and money, but I just want to hear your take on this and inform some poeple on what’s really going on. (Warning, this may reeeaally piss you off).

What’s really crazy is that the electric car was killed and very soon after was replaced witht the useless gas hog wannabe humvee H2. Yeah things would get bad if the oil industry was killed off, but gradually it would work and create more jobs, it’s not something that would work out great at first, but it’s something that has to be done, and fast. Alaska is having trouble providing oil to a hungrier oil counsimer market, and there are already plans to drill for oil all through national parks and forrests, so I guess you can say byebye animal habitat.
admin answers:
The oil companies and American Big Three automobile manufacturers make huge campaign contributions to the Republican Party. They don’t want to change the cars that they make, despite their market share loss, so the President and his followers make sure that there is no pressure put on them to do so. Bush even overrules states like California that want only high gas mileage cars in their state.
In my opinion, as long as people vote for Republicans this trend will continue until the Earth can no longer be inhabited by human beings. That is JUST my opinion.

Linda asks…
Has anybody seen the film “Who killed the electric car” ?
I saw this film last night about the technology that is available that the car companies and oil companies don’t want us to know about. It pi**ed me off so bad that I wonder why we Americans are not demanding something be done about this. Especially in light of the soaring gas prices. I understand there are conversion kits available to the public but would have no idea how to do this or where to find someone that can.
I’m just interested in hearing other people’s thoughts on this. Thanks.
thank you all who answered. I am surprised at the answers though. In my opinion and limited knowledge, the cars don’t cost so much more to make. The r/d was what cost so much. There are way less parts involved in the construction and the cars are able to go about 100 miles between charges. So charging once a day at home is good for using the car to just “get around town or to and from work”. I would love to have the opportunity to own such a car.
Again, thanks for your answers
thank you Clueless, your answer was well thought and well written. I agree with your thought on America and it’s SUV and truck relationship. I don’t get it either. I personally use a scooter “moped” for getting around town, but own a Sebring for longer trips. My husband is an SUV offender, and I have no idea why.
thanks Karatema for your answer as well. It was good to hear from someone who had personal experience with an EV1.
The film might be a lot of propoganda but it got me thinking about things and I thought it was a useful piece of work.
Thanks to all of you.
admin answers:
I watched it too but i dont think the car and oil companies are the only ones to blame. Consumers, the american people got wrapped up into this big SUV craze opposed to smaller more efficient cars. I personally am ashame by people i know who are single household driving an tahoe just because it looks cool
on my way to work i see more SUVs and trucks on the road than regular cars, its a free country you can drive what you want but i think its a waste if you are driving a huge gas guzzler without purpose(such as a truck for business/towing or an SUV for a big family)
think about it gas is more expensive in europe, but you rarely see big cars in europe mainly subcompact to midsize cars. America has had a history of gas gluttony from muscle cars to SUVs. We really didnt see a change into economy cars until the last gas crisis we had. Then gas went down and people starting buying SUVs
anyways hopefully the next president will push for better fuel economy and alternative fuels.

Mark asks…
EV electric cars?
Just wondering how reliable, affordable and efficient the conversion kit places are t hat can make any car into an electric car. I want to have my 00 Buick converted once the engine goes, has anyone done this or have any tips, advice or otherwise useful info on the topic? Any reputable places that professional convert cars and estimated prices to do so..?
admin answers:
I drive an EV conversion, and I love it. You should be aware, however, that a car with automatic transmission is a poor candidate for conversion. The electric motor doesn’t need the transmission, so it will just waste energy. Below is a page with links to electric converter businesses. Converted cars can be had for as little as $5000, though $10000 is a more typical expenditure:

Helen asks…
Are there free plans for building your own electric car online somewhere?
I would like to build an electric car that I can use for my everyday drive to work and back. It’s 22 miles one way and the grocery store is across the street from my work so I can just walk to the store while I’m at work for groceries. Something simple and small like a VW beetle or a Fiero or even a Gremlin. I would like to know if there was a kit or something that makes converting a car easier. Also a beach buggy would be a good conversion as well.

What steps are involved?
This overview provides a high level framework for performing a conversion. Please review
the references and other links (in the next section) for more complete information.
1.
Determine your driving needs: range – the distance you travel in a single day; type of
vehicle – family car, commuter, utility vehicle, or racing car.
2.
Look for an EV kit for the vehicle you choose. Kits will make the conversion significantly
easier – they include all of the parts, except batteries. A conversion kit will cost about
$4,000-$6,000, and the batteries, depending on how many you need, can cost another
$700-$1,200.
3.
Make sure you have access to the proper tools and supplies, and a place to do the
conversion. You may need to rent equipment like engine hoists and contract out
welding work. Contact EV veterans for advice and assistance.
4. Familiarize yourself with the EV components that will be installed. The most common
batteries for EV conversions are lead-acid batteries, specifically, 12-volt sealed batteries.
5.
Safety. Any project involving automobiles and tools has inherent risks. Be aware of
these possible hazards to prevent damage to the vehicle and serious injury to you.
6.
Remove the ICE components, making room for the EV components.
7.
Install the motor, components, battery box, and batteries.
8.
Install the wiring for propulsion (traction pack), auxiliary power system (12-volt
system), and traction pack charging system, and displays and controls.
9. Safety testing. Test the battery charger; check the wiring and fuses,
connections. Then take it out for a spin and notice the quiet, smooth ride. Be
sure to show it off!

Charles asks…
Why are my lights flickering after I installed and HID conversion kit?
I just got in the mail today my HID conversion kit and I am trying to install it. I only did one headlight, but so far, when I turn my headights on, the one with the HID kit on it, flickers. It’s like something is connected right, or I dunno. I haven’t tried both lights at once, just the one. Everything seems connected right. Then I read manual and it said that if the light flickers, it could be “caused by a low electric current and to usea higher battery of at least 70 amps. The car is a 2006 Sukuzi Verona with H7 bulbs. THANKS.
admin answers:
Yeah, you might need to run the engine when you run the lights. The other thing is the daytime light feature (or automatic lights) needs to be disabled, switched off, or fuse pulled for it. Lastly, make sure the right size fuse is installed in the new system and every contact to and from the ballast is clean and secure.
