Your Questions About Electric Cars Kits

Richard Your Questions About Electric Cars Kits

Richard asks…

Do you know anything about building remote controlled cars?

i have decided i want to buy a remote controlled car kit and assemble it myself… i don’t want to buy one that is ready to go out of the box… i’ve read online that beginners should stick with electric cars and move to nitro after they’ve got some experience… i’m not to picky as to whether i build a street car or an off-road car, i just want to build the thing and make it work… do you have any suggestions for me?.. any ideas that i should consider before i buy a kit?.. do you have any good suggestions as to what type of kit i should buy and what i can expect to pay?.. do you know of any reliable websites that sell kits?.. can you link me directly to a kit you have built that isn’t too difficult but isn’t for like a 10 year old?.. i’m 30 years old, so a challenge isn’t an issue…

Nitrotek.co.uk are good! They only have like 3 self build kits and they are nitro. Anyhow i think u should just buy an electric car take it apart and then put it back together with higher standard parts for your own use and fun

Daniel asks…

AC electric car thoughts?

I am looking for ideas on AC electric cars. i have seen the kits that use an AC motor and an inverter unit to convert the battery power for use in the motor. I am wondering if there is any advantage to using a VFD and an appropriate size generator? I know locomotives use the motor/generator set up with good efficiency. if i wanted to use a 20hp induction motor i wonder how i would pick a VFD and a generator so as to make a reliable set up? thoughts?

admin answers:

The Toyota Prius uses an AC motor Nimh batteries and a 4 cylinder petrol motor. It has all the control circuitry for regenerative braking, etc already developed. It has no provision to charge the battery from teh household supply. All power comes from the petrol motor.

Paul Your Questions About Electric Cars Kits

Paul asks…

Where can I find an electric vehicle for low cost?

Our family is interested in electric mobility. My brother wants an electric scooter. My mom wants an electric or hybrid golf cart or car like vehicle that would be street legal. Something she doesn’t need a license for since she’d disabled she doesn’t have one. But she still wants to be able to get more groceries than she can carry or push in a wagon. I’m wanting a scooter too so I can get to the library and the park.
How can we find stuff like this for low cost or are there even kits or plans that you can build something like this?

Yes, there are cheap electric cars. An interesting one is the ZAP, which is only $10,000. It has a top speed of 40mph:

*
Consider also an ‘NEV’, which stands for ‘neighborhood electric vehicle.’ These cars top out at 25mph. There are a couple here for very reasonable prices:

If you want a more normal car that can do freeway speeds, you could try a conversion. These are gas cars which have been inexpensively converted to electric. More details here:

Best of luck!
