What is the connection between Monster and Careerbuilder and online colleges?

Hi All,

I have often wondered what the connection is between Monster and online schools (colleges). You cannot enter or leave the website without passing through a form inquiring if you want to register to attend X online university. Ditto for CareerBuilder.

Are these job boards owned by a college consortium of some sort? Thanks.

admin answers:

No, that’s just how they make their money. The colleges pay them for the privilege of spamming you raw.
They figure that people who are unemployed are easy targets for a career change or maybe they are fed up with dead end jobs.

Linda asks…

Is there a way to post my resume on Careerbuilder without my employer being able to find me in a search?

Is there a way to post my resume on Careerbuilder without my employer being able to find me in a search by typing in the name of our company? I’d like to start post my resume so that new employers can find me in another state, but I fear that my current employer may be able to find me somehow. Is this possible, or no? Thanks in advance.

admin answers:

Just about every single professional has his resume out there.
You never know when something better will come along.

Think about it in a positive way.
If an employer knows that you are presenting yourself out there you will be more apt to get raises, since they will know that you may bite if something better comes along.
Keep your self respect and let your boss know if he doesn’t pay you enough – you are gone.

What is the best career job search site? I have been on careerbuilder; indeed; does it help to get on ladders?

What is the best career job search site? I have been on careerbuilder; indeed; does it help to get on ladders or anything like that or pay for one of those things that will get your resume out to a lot of different employers; are there head hunters anymore; I have a great resume but cannot find anything; any advice would be appreciated.

admin answers:

It really depends on your skill set. For general job searchs, monster.com is an excellent choice. As for engineers and careers that overlap with software, then www.dice.com is the best. I’ve used dice.com successfully many times. The “catch” is to market your skills and experience effectively on your resume. If you have a college education, see if your career services center offers a portfolio website that employers can look at with your skills. The more skills and experience you have, the better. I was laid off a couple of times early in my career. I adapted to the cruel job market by developing a multi-disciplinary background. So now I have had many inquiries, interviews, daily phone calls, emails, etc. From dice.com. I got a great job a few days ago and am euphoric right now. I would recommend a career in health career or engineering. Software engineering, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering are good examples. Non-traditional majors that are also good include MBA/healthcare, physician’s assistant, MRI tech, medical informatics, medical billing, business intelligence, FDA regulatory affairs, etc. Just choose one you like.

Ruth asks…

Why does my resume come up different on Careerbuilder?

When I browse and attach it to CareerBuilder it looks completely different than how it looks when it is saved on Word. Why is that, and what can I do to fix it?

admin answers:

Hello,

Job boards require resumes to be posted as plain (ASCII) text. This is so that no one can possibly have any difficulty reading your resume (for example, if you have Word and they don’t, they would not be able to see your resume). Once you have the resume uploaded to CareerBuilder and it is a plain text document, you can use the tips below to help make it look a little better.

Although Text files cannot be formatted with bold, italics, etc., it is possible to get “creative” using the standard characters on your keyboard. For example, Headings can be made ALL CAPS, and text can be emphasized using rows of hyphens (-), equal signs (=), etc. Asterisks (*), plus signs (+), or hyphens (-) can serve as bullets.

Examples:—————————–OBJECTIVE—————————–================EDUCATION================
* Bullet 1* Bullet 2+ Bullet 1+ Bullet 2- Bullet 1- Bullet 2

Keep in mind that even though you don’t love how it looks, the potential employer is expecting to see it that way (because they all look that way). Print a nice formatted version of the resume and bring it to the interview.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

What should I write for my CareerBuilder resume title?

I’m a college student (2nd year) and I’m looking for a slightly professional part-time job. I’m about to post my resume on CareerBuilder but I don’t know what to write for my resume title. All the jobs that I have had are in the typical “part-time, in high school, after school” jobs.

How can we protect ourselves from company scam job’s ad in the careerbuilder?

I went for a job interview and I asked them for a formal site name so I could research for my on protection, they refused to give me the site name. I feel that are companies putting scam ads in the job site like careerbuilder and monster. How can we protect ourselves from that?

admin answers:

My naive boyfriend was recently duped into one of those jobs where they throw the key words at you: “entry level!” “great for recent college grads!” “marketing and management!”, etc. Here’s my advice from our recent experience.

1.) If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

2.) Google the company’s name before even applying. A simple search in Google has saved me countless hours that I would have spent applying, in interviews, and possibly even working at jobs that were not as advertised. RipOffReport.com is also a really good resource.

3.) Ask questions like crazy. You were right to tell them you wanted to do your research! If there’s questions they’re unwilling to give straight answers to, it’s not worth your time.

4.) Be VERY leary when companies say they’re only looking for people who can start right away. This is especially something to be leary about when it’s a too-good-to-be-true-job posting. What they do is they get you to leave your current job without a two weeks notice, because you think you just CANNOT pass up this opportunity– just to have it be a job that wasn’t as advertised. They hope that since you left your previous job so quickly, you’ll have no choice but to stay with them.

5.) Use your instinct. It might seem legitimate until you get there. If you find the office environment strange, or the behavior of the employees a little off, don’t just overlook it. That signals that you need to do a little more research before investing any time/personal information into the company.

Best Wishes!
