John Your Questions About Biomass Pros And Cons

John asks…

what are some pros and cons to using Biomass Conversion?

admin answers:

Its cheep and renewable but it puts carbon dioxide in the air and particulates.

George Your Questions About Biomass Pros And Cons

George asks…

What are some pros and cons for coal, oil, natural gas, uranium, hydroelectric, solar, geothermal, and biomass?

I know it’s a long question but ten points for whoever that gives me the best answer icon smile Your Questions About Biomass Pros And Cons

admin answers:

Coal:
some pros: it’s cheap, it’s convenient cause you can burn it anywhere as long as you build a plant.
Some cons: burning it is known to release sulfur into the atmosphere which is known to cause acid rain, another con is that some open pit coal mines destroy local ecosystems.

Oil:
some pros: it’s convenient cause you can burn it anywhere, we’ve developed many products from oil one of which is plastic.
Some cons: it’s a renewable resource, however, it takes millions of years and certain conditions to form it. Plastics are known to take hundreds to thousands of years to naturally decay. Burning it releases CO2 into the atmosphere (but you already knew that)

Natural Gas:
some pros: large untapped sources still exist today, burns 30% more cleaner than coal, it’s released by bacteria as they breakdown organic waste… Once it’s released it can be harvested.
Some cons: even though it’s 30% cleaner it still burns and releases stuff into the atmosphere, it’s mostly composed of methane which is known to be extremely flammable and it’s also a greenhouse gas that contributes more to the greenhouse effect than co2 does.

Uranium:
some pros: it is known to provide large amounts of energy, when used it releases water vapor into the atmosphere.
Some cons: has a half-life of millions of years, that means it stays radioactive for millions of years. We also have no place to permanently store it for that long amount of time. It can be reprocessed and recycled, however, it’s way more cheaper to constantly store it than have it reprocessed and recycled.

Hydroelectric:
Some pros: clean free energy from a natural source.
Some cons: large reservoirs form behind dams change or destroy local ecosystems, fish that are known to use these rivers and streams as breeding grounds can’t do that anymore cause there’s a large dam in their way.

Solar:
Some pros: can provide energy wherever the sun hits, clean energy from a natural source, can be bought and placed on your home (which makes it more convenient)
some cons: the amount of energy provided is heavily dependent on how many hours of sunlight it gets, solar panel installation can cost up to $40,000 (at least where i live)

Geothermal:
Some pros: clean energy from a natural source deep within the earth.
Some cons: certain conditions need to be met for a geothermal plant these conditions are a natural groundwater source that is heated up by the earth. These conditions can’t be met everywhere.

Biomass:
Some pros: a good way to dispose of organic waste, renewable source made from waste (aka stuff we view as ‘trash’)
Some cons: still releases CO2 when burned, smells really bad.

NUCLEAR POWER—Nuclear power is good and very powerful but the risks are very high. If the radioactive isotopes aren’t what they determine to be then a nuclear meltdown could occur which is BAD. Also the spent fuel rods are being buried which could be a enviorment issue, however a new project popped up to re-use the spent rods.

HYDROPOWER—–hydopower is very safe, but on the other side theres not alot of places where it could be stable enough to hook up a reactor too. Like the hoover dam thats a all hydropower which does help put down costs on electricity.

And biomass is to generel give me an example

GEOTHERMAL—-geothermal are thermal vents like geysers, there inconsistant and don’t give out too much energy.

HYDROGEN—–hydrogen is right now trying to be perfected to be use by everyday means, but theres a new car called the Honda FCX which is completely run on hydrogen, but is only sold in california because there aren’t any hydrogen filling stations anywhere else. The explanation on how it creates electricity is long and compelling, look it up on wikipedia lol0

SOLAR POWER—-solar is one of the cleanest but i some places the shine doesn’t shine for 12 hours and we need consistant power thrrought the day.

WIND—-wind is very efficiant and clean and you could hook up your own if you pay 2,000 dollars to hookup one next to your house. However theres only a few places where therre is consistant wind flow.

TIDAL—-wave and tidal is a new research, its caused by kinetic energy driving actutiors in buoys. Think about ballons that are heavy that have joints, everytime the joints move electricity is produced. And for underwater fans its the same concept with the air fans except they move slower to protect underwater wildlife.

Wow that was a long lol

Lizzie Your Questions About Biomass Pros And Cons

Lizzie asks…

What do you think of animal intensive farming?

What do you think?
I have a biology exam tomorrow, and im revising biomass and pops up intensive farming.
I think it would be nice if someone could highlight the pros and cons, that i could mould into my exam tomorrow!
Thank you!

I think it’s not good, but I think it will have to be, especially in the US which has the fastest growing population in the industrialized world; whereas, it gains population not only from legal and illegal immigration, but from a gain in childbirth. All other industrialized countries have a minus population gain from birth. Another thing that makes the situation more imperative for the US is that the US grows outwardly, spawling onto farmland and taking it out of production. China, by contrast, is moving people from little farms and into highrises in the city; thus, it is gaining farmland, plus it has a minus population gain.
