Your Questions About Electric Car Charging Stations

Donald Your Questions About Electric Car Charging Stations

Donald asks…

Would people buy an electric car if there was an efficient method of charging the cars?

I am conducting a little poll to see how many people would use an electric car if it were efficient to charge (multiple charging stations, long range, and low cost).

In other words, would you drive a car that you could pay $0.75 (per 40 miles) to fill up vs. $4.00 (per 40 miles).
Just say YES if you would. Or if you wouldn’t please state why.

Electric cars are a non-starter in the USA. People are too wigged out about the battery-range thing. Wait until plug-in hybrids are common, and people go a whole year without ever using the onboard gas engine, and they start going “hey wait, why did I pay $5000 extra for the gas engine?” And people will figure out that electrics CAN work.

Nancy Your Questions About Electric Car Charging Stations

Nancy asks…

If we set up charging stations for electric cars, how can we keep— ?

—-pranksters and vandals from unplugging them?
How can we keep homeless people from plugging in heaters and other appliances?
MARVINSU:—-Naturally, you would need a device to lock and accept payment, but since anyone with a few coins could use the devices for any purpose, it might be better to issue permits or coded cards.
Having public access to electric outlets could be a good thing , however, female, and gay cab-drivers might be plugging in their vibrators. —No real problem , but it might make it hard to find a cab.
It’s never been clear to me whether the charging unit was already installed in the car, or it was what you were plugging into. Seems, like it would be better to have it as part of the car. That way you could plug it in anywhere. But that brings us back to the security problem ; doesn’t it ?
KEVIN R:—Good point. I think the battery exchange station would work best.
I don’t know why plug-in car companies are going ahead without having all these little problems worked out.
Seems like the junk business will become the biggest industry in the near future; crowded with gas guzzlers and obsolete plug-ins .

If you want to see what kind of infrastructure it would take to support electric cars, go to www.betterplace.com. Sounds like a great idea to me>
