What is the definition for biomass decay?
good short definitions please.
And how do we make energy out of it?
admin answers:
The decay of biomass means that biomass which is wood or litter is slowly decaying meaning that it is falling to pieces and slowly rotting away.
Good luck!

John asks…
I need to know the grade ten definition of Biomass for ecology. Do you know? Thanks.?
I have an exam coming up on Tuesday. I’m going over all of my notes now, but I am unsure of what Biomass is. When I look it up. I get all these confusing answers. I need someone to tell me as simple as possible what Biomass.. at the moment I understand that it has to do with the amount of certain organisms that are alive in a certain area.. but that’s about it! Thank you for your time.
admin answers:
You’re pretty much correct. It’s the mass (or weight if you want) of organic material; it’s usually used for determining the construction of a biomass pyramid for a community.

Linda asks…
What is Biomass and how does it work?
We are doing a work on that on school and I was wondering if you could help me by giving your definition on Biomass and how it works exactly. How can this produce electricity to homes around a whole town?
admin answers:
See above for definition of biomass.
My experiences with biomass:
In my area, a lot of paper mills create their own steam, a lot of the low pressure steam is produced by a boiler that burns biomass. In this case, it is usually wood, (biomass), the sawdust, wood bark, etc is burnt by the boiler to produce steam.
A northern Minnesota utility just installed a new biomass boiler. They will be receive sawdust, bark, rejected wood from local saw mills, there boiler will create steam by burning this biomass which will run the steam turbines which will create electricty.

Lisa asks…
What is Biomass? – Help!?
I’m trying to understand what biomass is for a self-study I have to do for Biology. The definition I’ve found is “the amount of biological material in an organism,” but I’ve also found the definition, “biomass is anything that is alive.” Then I found that biomass can be garbage/rubbish, which isn’t alive.
So I don’t understand! Can someone give me a simple, but correct definition that I can use for my self-study and I’ll always understand!
Thank you!
admin answers:
The total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level is called a biomass. Biomass is usually in terms of grams of organic matter per unit area. A biomass pyramid represents the amount of potential food availiable for each trophic level in an ecosystem.

Susan asks…
In relation to plants, what would be the definition of growth?
I am doing a biology lab were seeds are grown in the dark and light. Seeds grown in the dark become longer but light grown seeds develop more biomass over time. I get all that stuff. But how then would you define growth?
admin answers:
Accumulation of biomass is growth. In the dark the biomass just happens to be all in one direction.

Betty asks…
what is biomass.primary production of biomass in deep waters?
definition of biomass. what is biofouling, bioconversion, metalimnion, limniologyand microbial ecology. give me five examples of aquatic habitat. discuss the mouth as a microbial habitat.
mention three classical microbial processes as well as as the microorganisms involvled and their products
admin answers:
Hum, they don’t make biology textbooks as they used to.
I guess posting all this as different and well written answers would have costed too many points, or too much time.

Ken asks…
Does anyone know what biomass energy is?
Does anyone know what biomass energy is and how it works?…. I also need to know the definition of nuclear power and how that works too.
Ugh! I Hate My Language arts teacher!!!
admin answers:
Biomass is a fancy term which means anything you can grow, this could be something like wood for instance but in the case of a “biomass reactor” basically a big boiler that makes electricity its more likely to be an agricultural waste product that can be burned
there are two sorts of nuclear power the one which we use right now nuclear fission and the one that could power the future nuclear fusion, nuclear fission is where you get enough of a radioactive material in a small enough space and because it is radioactive it gets hot just like that and the heat is used to drive turbines and generators, this is called nuclear fission where atoms are being split off the material and are releasing energy
in nuclear fusion atoms are fired at each other at several million miles per hour and they literally fuse together when they hit each other this process makes even more power that fission and it is clean it uses hydrogen and emits helium
