Sandy asks…
How near are we to getting electric cars that are as good as other cars?
I like the idea of electric powered cars but it seems that they are really slow and need to keep getting charged up again. Are we going to see electric cars that are just like other cars soon
admin answers:
Electric cars are very efficient in preventing pollution. But in pick up and long haul they may take a lot of years to compete with the gas engines. The acceleration problem may be solved faster than the long haul. The reason is the battery technology. Even if the battery technology improved two times the range also can go up by 2 times which again is going to be lower that a gas engine. Charging takes time, on the other hand gas filling does not take time at all.
But for city driving we should all support a electric vehicle. Just imagine a crowded city gets converted into a electric car only city and the amount of smog and carbon particles in atmosphere will go off and the residents can breathe safely.

Charles asks…
If everybody starts driving electric cars, will alot of auto mechanicanics be put out of work?
We usually need these guys when the internal combustion engine in our cars need to be fixed. I have a fan that has an electric motor, it has been in use for 60 years and that motor has never needed a repair ( its my Grandma’s) Could the cars powered by electric motors become this reliable?
admin answers:
The truth is the internal combustion engine is such a small part of what mechanics do. I know everyone hates mechanics and casts them out as charlatan, trust me I know how to work on my own car I have been working on cars for 20 years now. Even I sometimes want to take my car to a mechanic. But to answer your question the Utopia that you speak of will never happen because even now the car company’s have realized the value of “planned obsolesces”. Car company’s can make a car last longer, but why would they? We as people get tired and want the newest and best comfort features available. Can you live with the same car for 60 years? Things will always break on a car because of the biggest flaw in the design, it still requires a human to drive it.

Donna asks…
What kind of engineers design electric cars?
I’m looking for my major in engineering for sure, I’m just not sure where I want to go into it. I’m really interested in electric cars but I’m just not sure which category of engineering it falls under.
admin answers:
Car design will mostly fall under mechanical. It took more then a certain type of engineer to design the electric car. You can help build it if your a mechanical, electrical or probably some other type of engineer related in the field.

Paul asks…
What are some disadvantages of electric cars?
I’m writing a paper, what are some disadvantages of electric cars? Also where does most of the electricity to our outlets come from?
admin answers:
Presently, it’s the range. It simply isn’t convenient for any thing but very short commutes.
The manufacturing entails many toxic materials and heavy metals – so there is both a manufacturing and a disposal concern with the environment.
The high current needed to propel the vehicle is a very real hazard for rescue workers and first responders to an accident scene.
The vehicles are only pollution free if the electricity source is pollution free.
They’re necessarily built as light and small as possible – and that’s no match for an SUV or even a conventional vehicle in a collision.
There is much research ongoing presently, and a new generation of battery as well as other new technologies may solve some of these concerns.

Betty asks…
How are electric cars better for the environment when 95% of electric in the USA is generated by burning coal?
So a gas powered machines uses gasoline. Electric cars use coal. Both pollute. Is electric pollution better than pollution generated by burning gasoline?
And Obama’s new regulations are going to result in 7,000 less coal miners.
My mistakes 57% of electricity in the USA is coal generated. 95% of the power where I live is coal generated.
admin answers:
Shhhh the greenies will be upset with facts
Just like Obama said, the cost of energy will be going up with his agenda
