Michael asks…
Are there any non-goofy-looking electric cars for sale under $20,000?
I’m interested in driving one, but I don’t want to fork over so much dough to drive one, you know? So I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of an electric car for sale that isn’t so goofy looking (I’m talking to you, Mr. Xebra), and the price tag is lower than $20,000.
admin answers:
There are neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) which fit your criteria, but their top speed is 25 mph. Some examples are the Zenn and Miles EVs:

Or you can also get an electric moped which can have top speeds up to 30 mph for much cheaper. A few examples:

How Much do Electric Cars Cost?
there are several new electric cars cumming out the next few years. I love the idea of electric cars and i would love to own one. unfortunately i could never afford a Tesla roadster or something like that. what are some affordable electric cars or cheep electric cars for sale that i could possibly buy in the next couple of years.
also is there a good source for finding information on electric cars online
admin answers:
As an electric car owner i know it can be difficult to make a decision on buying an electric car. Since electric cars haven’t been around for that long most of us don’t know much about electric cars and this makes it difficult to make a informed decision regarding a electric car purchase.
You are right in that there is several new electric cars soon to be released and some that are already available. Hear is a few affordable electric cars that you should look into.
The GEM e2 $7,495 MSRP
this inst what most people are looking for when they want to buy a “electric car” but it is very affordable is this is the sort of car you are looking for.
The Ford Focus Electric $ ??,???
Ford has not announced a official price for this car but many believe it will be in the lower 30K range.
If you look at some of the pictures of the inside of this car you will find it is absolutely beautiful. And loaded with technology
Mitsubishi I-MiEV price < $30,000
Mitsubishi has also yet to announce the price of the upcoming I-MiEV but they claim it will cost less than 30,000 the rumor is that this car will have excellent acceleration even when compared to gasoline engines
Honda Fit EV $29,990
Take your typical Honda Fit and remove the engine gas pipe and and gas tank. Replace those with electric engine and lithium ion batteries and you've got the Honda Fit EV. There are other differences as well but the EV will be very similar to the Honda Fit gasoline
Nissan Leaf $25,280
this is the car that in my opinion most other electric car companies will model there cars after. It has more features than most of the electric cars on the market and cost much less. I believe ford might be able with the Nissan leaf as far as features go but most believe the ford focus electric will not be nearly as affordable as the Nissan leaf.
Chevrolet Volt $32,780
i personally own this car and i love it. It was one of the first electric cars released and unlike most of the electric cars around it has been Time Tested and has proven to be a great car. I also love that you can use gasoline if you need to!
To help answer you question about finding i good source for electric car information i got all my information from personal experience and from this article

it this site has a lot more information than i could possibly describe for you here

Got any suggestions, wacky or otherwise, for topping up the battery of electric cars?
You may have heard recently in the news about the governments plan to boost electric car sales by offering subsidies of upto £5K for electric or plug-in cars ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8001254.stm ). One of the problems with electric cars is how to top-up the battery without excessive down-time (ie periods where you can’t drive the car). Have you any suggestions, wacky or otherwise, for how to do this?
My own suggestion is to divert some airflow through tubes that run the length of the car (maybe even avoiding the passenger compartment!), with miniature wind-turbines inside that help recharge the battery.
>There wouldn’t be near enough power >generated from that small amount of wind to >make any noticeable difference. Seriously.
Ever tried trying to open the door of your car when it’s traveling at 30mph or more? You might discover that the ‘wind’ is not that small!
>It would require MORE energy to move the car >and you will get less energy from the turbines >due to irreversibility’s.
Irreversibility’s of what?
>You can’t get something for nothing. The car’s motor is what is making the wind you feel. If you put a turbine out the window or in a tube or whatever, you would make less energy than you use to make the wind to turn it with (friction, less than 100% efficiency…).
I agree you can’t get something for nothing. The idea of the tubes would be to take some airflow that would have otherwise been acting to slow the car (through friction of airflow, or drag), and to instead partially convert it to electricity (via the miniature wind-turbines). I wouldn’t stick the wind-turbines out the window!
>How about putting a dynamo into the passenger side window winder. Whilst driving along the passenger can repeatedly wind the window up and down to generate electricity to help top up the batteries. This would also dramatically cut down on friends who wanted to ponce a lift somewhere as well. heeeeheeeheee.
Good idea, but with some minor problems:
Extra drag whilst the window is in the open position.
Your passenger may develop RSI.
Your passenger may develop bigger arm muscles to thump you with!
>can it run on feces?
If you could bear the stench!

Regenrative braking is the most effective way of topping up the battery by recapturing waste energy and already used on most electric cars and hybrids
Solar pannels could contribute something, but would increase the weight of the vehicle, and probably drag too.
A generator trailer is a well tried solution = instant hybrid for long journies, but without carrying the weight & complexity for normal travel. Http://www.evalbum.com/2312
the first question to ask is given that an electic car can travel 200 miles before recharging and then recharged in 10 minutes http://www.phoenixmotorcars.com is this really “excessive downtime”. The driver should take a 10minute break too after 200 miles.

John asks…
Why do some people still act like you are crazy when you tell them there is a viable electric car for sale?
I’ve seen the Tesla Roadster for maybe over 2 years now and when someone was telling me that there are no viable electric cars I pointed it out to them. Then they attempted to make fun of me by saying that it must go about 40 miles and has a top speed of 30 mph. I was dumbfounded at the fact that they made themselves look stupid but I had to simply show them the web site and the people who actually own them in order to save them the embarrassment. What is the big fear? Why are people afraid to embrace that we live in the future? Tesla is not the only electric car company either. You’ve got Phoenix and a bunch of others and the costs of these vehicles is comparable to any performance car of its kind. In some cases the electric carf simply outshines the gas-powered one which is equivalent on nothing except maybe the way it looks from the outside, but otherwise inferior in every way.
admin answers:
I don’t know, but it’s infuriating. No matter how good these electric cars get, people complain. I think they just can’t stand the fact that it’s far less damaging to the environment. Or that if people buy EV’s then somehow the “greenie liberals win” or something
Current EV technology can get up to 220 miles per charge and do 130 mph. I think if you cut that in half that would be ideal for most city drivers. But no, it’s not fast enough, it’s not far enough. I think even if cars did 200mph and got over 1000 miles to the charge people would find a reason to complain. If you’re only going to drive 30 miles a day, 40 tops then you don’t NEED to get 600 miles to the charge anyway.
Plus the batteries are recyclable and can be replaced or even changed for BETTER batteries. Repair costs are 1/10th the amount
