Electric cars?
I live in the uk, where there is a lot of talk about introducing new electric cars in place of petrol/diesel fueled cars.
I recently read about an electric Range rover and was wondering, do these electric cars offer less performance than petrol/diesel models?
admin answers:
There have been electric cars that could happily drive at 100mph if you so wished.
Performance has not been the problem, for getting an electric car into production in the past
The main problem was the Oil companies bought up the patents…. It was not in the interests of the Oil Companies to mass produce a car with no need of oil.
But times are changing. We will soon see cars on our roads, with no emissions, some form of car that self charges as you drive.
The technology already exists, dynamos on the axles, solar panels, storage cells are getting more and more efficient.
New super bright LEDs on all the lights will reduce battery drain. The car will be lighter, new alloys and carbon plastics can be as strong as steel.
Imagine an all electric car with lower running cost, lower insurance and tax, perhaps even lower parking costs.
So if you want to see the cars sooner, make the politicians work , All new cars could be electric in less than 10 years, less than 5 if we push the governments and companies to do it.
So whats next????
Electric powered Aircraft? And pollution free skies
Lets make it happen

electric cars?
I have been wondering about electric cars:
If you convert the petrol straight into movement (i.e. engine) you get a lot of kinetic energy. But say you use the mains. they burn the coal, gas, etc. to create heate to create movement to create electricity to charge your car wich is converted to movement. isn’t just using a good diesel car better for the environment in general.
Hey paul
with methane when u burn it u get oxygen + co2 theese r better for the environment than methane

I’d have an electric car tomorrow. The problem is recharging the battery and distance available on a single charge.
The industry brought out some years ago the DC over AC system mainly aimed at the materials handling industry. This cuts down on wear & tear on the motors and extends battery life but also requires an exceedingly large traction battery pack in the region of 80 volts. Each cell of this pack is 2 volts and believe me they are not light you would therefore need a vehicle of massive proportions just to take the weight of the battery pack. Plus of course you would need facilities for changing the pack after about 100 miles – ok if just local use but for long distance??
My favourite alternative is methane gas powered. There is already a conversion pack for petrol vehicles and filling stations providing this facility are increasing. There is no smell and next to no pollution and the last I heard a grant was available for modifying your vehicle. Also from an environment point of view methane can be recycled from rubbish.

Electric Cars?
Why isn’t the world filled with electric cars already!? And why are cars still huge?
admin answers:
Gas companies and people feel safer in big cars, more manly, etc. The world is full of stupid people

Daniel asks…
Why do people think that electric cars will reduce air pollution?
If we’re talking about conventional electric cars that have to be plugged in, you have to consider how that electricity is being generated. The majority of power plants in this country are COAL-POWERED. If we all had electric cars, we wouldn’t have any exhaust coming out of the cars, but there would be a lot more coal being burned to generate the electricity to charge the cars‘ batteries. So how does that reduce pollution?
admin answers:
Actually, I think that solar panels at home to charge the electric car would make a difference.
I suspect that the inefficiencies in electric power generation due to generation loss and transmission loss may well result in more CO2 emissions if we rely on the exisitng electric generation system than if we just used gasoline powered vehicles.
Since we have no new nuclear plants and most of our rivers have already been dammed for hydro, incremental electricity for the electric car will undoubtedly come from coal fired plants. There is better coal plant technology that reduces CO2 dramatically, but it is not manatory and is not the method of choice for power plant construction due to higher costs.

Susan asks…
Why do people keep insisting that electric cars are more green than other cars?
They run on electricity, and that means they don’t belch out loads of fumes into the atmosphere.
But that electricity has to be generated in a power station before it can be used in the car, and nine times out of ten, you can be sure that it was generated from fossil fuels.
So surely, electric cars are still responsible for polluting the planet.
Kennilope.
That’s just about the dumbest, most poorly thought through answer I’ve ever read.
admin answers:
Agreed, electric cars which are charged from traditional grids are not as environmentally friendly as most people believe. That electricity is generated elsewhere, usually by burning, unless you live near a large hydro electric dam or near a lot of windmills. In the case of coal-fired electricity, you’re just moving the pollution from all over the street to the source of the power.
The greenest transportation would be an electric vehicle which is charged from a renewable source. If your home were set up for solar-electric generation, you could use your home’s electricity to charge your car’s batteries. If your home is near a hydroelectric dam or a wind power generation area, then you’re much greener than the rest of the coal fired electric areas.
Ultimately, a solar car which recharges itself while driving would be ideal.

Lizzie asks…
How many full electric cars are currently available to the public?
I was just looking at the Nissan Volt, and am amazed. When did humanity take such a bold leap into the new age and where was I when this happened? Anyway, what other car companies manufacture electric cars that actually run on pure electricity, perform all of the functions of a normal car, and can drive for a reasonable amount of time without being charged? Thanks
Nissan Leaf*. It’s the Chevy Volt sorry I know that one too.

The Tesla Roadster is available now if you can afford it ![]()
Ford makes a Transit Connect EV delivery van, available now.
The Th!nk City is available in Europe.
The ZENN EV neighborhood electric vehicle was available for a while, but they stopped making it.
The Mitsubishi i MiEV is in Japan, coming to the US soon.
The Ford Focus EV looks awesome, due in about a year.
Honda has announced an EV Fit in about a year as well.

Robert asks…
How good are electric cars compared to normal ones? How do they work exactly?
I’m 17, I’ll get a car soon, I’m just wondering how electric cars stack up next to a regular car…pros and cons?
admin answers:
Electric cars come in hybrid and pure-electric forms. Hybrids use gas engines in combination with electric motors, and may or may not have to be plugged in. Pure electric cars need to be plugged in, and the time it takes varies.
This explains the variation in charge times: http://www.plug-in.com/charge-times-how-long-to-fill-your-battery/
If you only plan on driving your car short distances between recharges, then an electric car will save you money in the long-run. However, since you’re young and might want to take road trips or travel to college, you might want to wait until prices for electric cars go down.
Performance-wise, they can be pretty equal if you are willing to pay the right price. The available options are less, however, and you should put a little time into researching a car before you buy it. I’m sure you already know to be safe once you get your car. Congrats and Good luck!

Nancy asks…
Are electric car parts cheaper than car parts for gasoline powered cars?
I’m doing a school report and I’m comparing electric cars to gasoline powered cars to see if car dealers should sell electric cars.
admin answers:
Some of the electric car parts are more expensive but most of them lasts longer than gas powered cars
